School Life Traditions

Traditions

Luther College High School has a rich tradition of activities and events outside of regular school hours that draw students, parents, alumni and friends, and members of the general community into our school!

Luther Invitational Basketball Tournament (L.I.T.)

Luther Invitational Volleyball Tournament (L.I.V.T.)

In 1998, teachers Mark Leupold and Ann Johnson set the stage for what has become a standout event in high school sports—the Luther Invitational Volleyball Tournament. Every year, Luther College High School hosts teams from Regina, Saskatoon, and beyond, drawing in top talent from rural areas and out-of-province competitors.

Our tournament is about more than just the game; it’s an opportunity for senior girls to showcase their skills and hard work on their home court. We aim to attract high-calibre competition and create an environment where excellence in volleyball thrives.

Musicals

Luther College High School has a rich tradition of bringing Broadway to life every year with a highly anticipated musical production. Since 1929, our stage has been a place where students explore their creativity and showcase their talents in a supportive and fun environment.

The annual musical, typically performed at the end of October, involves over 150 Luther students—from the cast and orchestra to crews handling makeup, costumes, lighting, sound, and stage management. It’s a monumental effort that offers students unique artistic experiences and the chance to shine in front of a live audience.

For fall 2024, we’re excited to present Shrek! Here’s a look back at some of our recent productions:

2023: Alice in Wonderland
2022: Sister Act Jr.
2021: Frozen Jr.
2019: Anne of Green Gables
2018: Wizard of Oz
2017: Cinderella
2016: Honk!
2015: The Sound of Music
2014: Beauty and the Beast (October)
2014: Oliver! (June)

And the tradition goes back even further, with standout performances like The Sound of Music in 1978, The Wizard of Oz in 1990, and our very first musical, Marrying Marion, performed in 1929 at Darke Hall.

Join us as we continue to celebrate the magic of theater and the incredible talent of our students, the 2024 dates will be announced soon!

All College Banquet

The All-College Banquet is a cherished tradition at Luther College High School, dating back to the spring of 1954. What began as an evening of fine dining, toasts, musical entertainment, and skits has evolved into a much-anticipated annual event, held every April or May.

This semi-formal event is a celebration of our school community, where students come together, dressed in their best, to enjoy a memorable evening. The banquet, hosted by our Student Representative Council (SRC), is a no-cost event for students, and while dressing up is encouraged, there’s no need to buy new clothes—girls typically wear a dress or skirt and blouse, while boys opt for a collared shirt and dress pants. For those who have suits, this is the perfect occasion to wear them.

The SRC works hard to create a magical atmosphere, choosing a theme and transforming the Merlis Belsher Heritage Centre into a stunning venue. The evening kicks off with a delicious buffet-style meal prepared by our food services team. A group of dedicated parent volunteers generously contributes their time to serve at the banquet and help with clean-up, adding to the spirit of the event.

The night concludes with entertainment, leaving everyone with wonderful memories of a special evening spent celebrating the Luther community.

Why is it called “All College”?
Since 1927, year-end banquets were held separately for boys and girls. With the addition of a gymnasium in 1953, these dinners were combined and held at the school. Originally called the “Spring Banquet,” the event was renamed the “All-College Banquet” in 1958, a tradition we proudly continue each year.

Film Night

Film Night at Luther College High School is a much-anticipated event that celebrates the creativity and dedication of our Film students in Grades 10, 11, 12, and IB Film classes. On a warm June evening, the entire school community gathers to enjoy a night filled with popcorn, treats, contests, and a showcase of student-made films that range from funny and scary to dramatic.

The evening is always full of excitement, with a few surprise films and the occasional teacher cameo adding to the fun. Film Night is more than just a screening—it’s a celebration of the imaginative spirit that thrives at Luther College, making it a highlight of the school year.
